After Hosting a Successful Inaugural Charity Golf Tournament in 2022, The San Diego Federal Bar Foundation Will Host its Second Tournament in September 2023
On September 19, 2022, The San Diego Federal Bar Foundation hosted its inaugural event – the 2022 Charity Golf Tournament. Hosted at the Lomas Santa Fe Country Club, the event brought together members of the San Diego federal judiciary and local practitioners to raise funds for two incredibly worthy causes.
First, the event raised scholarship funds for the Peter J. Mazza Outstanding Federal Lawyer Award. Peter Mazza is a past president of the San Diego FBA. Sadly, in 2020, Pete passed away at the age of 42. At the time of his passing, Pete was the First Assistant in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California, second only to the U.S. Attorney. The Peter J. Mazza Award is presented as a memorial to the outstanding, inspirational, and selfless leadership Pete Mazza demonstrated throughout his life, both professionally and in his community service. A charitable contribution made in the name of the recipient reflects the essence of the person in whose honor this award is established.
The event also raised funds for Just the Beginning (JTB). Recognizing that for many students, particularly students of color and those from underrepresented communities, the path to law school or a successful legal career is not always clear. JTB works to illuminate that path by lighting the spark of recognition that it is possible to become a lawyer and a leader. That spark is “just the beginning” for our scholars and leaders.
Following a competitive putting contest, a healthy round of golf, and successful silent auction, attendees were fortunate to hear Megan Mazza give a heartwarming speech honoring the memory of Pete.

Those in attendance also learned more about the mission of JTB from JTB Executive Director Antoinette Smith as well as the work being done by the San Diego Steering Committee of JTB thanks to the vision and leadership of District Judge Gonzalo Curiel.

Thanks to the leadership and planning efforts of San Diego Bar Foundation President David Finn and Board Member Dylan Aste, as well as the generosity of Title Sponsor Jones Day [consider listing all the sponsors here] and several other sponsors and donors, the event raised more than [insert amount] to support the foundation’s chosen causes.
